Lead rolls are one of the most common building materials for flat roof flashings, though contractors also use them considerably on roofs with a pitch or slope.
Lead roll flashing is corrosion-resistant and pliable to any shape and can last several decades when installed correctly.
Using Lead Flashing on Flat and Pitched Roofs
The standard way of applying lead flashings to an entire flat roof is by dressing milled lead over equally spaced wooden battens or “timber rolls.” These battens lay out the straight edges to guide and support the lead flashing installation.

When the roof has a pitch, lead is extensively used as soakers (for tiled and shingled roofs), valleys, ridges, and dormers.

Choosing the Right Thickness of Lead Flashing
Menzies Lead Rolls come in 20-foot rolls. We have three standard sizes, each meant for different applications:
9-inch (Light)
Our 9-inch variety is the lightest of the bunch. We recommend it for lead soakers, cladding, and weathering. It’s best suited for projects that don’t require heavy-duty protection or where cost-efficiency is a priority.
12-inch (Medium)
Our 12-inch variety is best for step flashing or flashing where a roof meets a wall or chimney. It’s also ideal for flat roof flashing, custom lead flashing, and sealing around roof penetrations (like skylights or vents).
18-inch (Heavy)
Our 18-inch variety is best for areas with higher risks of water penetration, such as roof valleys, chimneys, flat roofs where ponding is likely, and parapets. If you’re looking for long-term durability, there’s no better option.
